Advocates in Action: Welcome to Our Website!

Advocates in Action Rhode Island is an independent, statewide, non-profit Self-Advocacy organization. AinA was created by a coaltion of Rhode Islanders with developmental disabilities to educate and empower others who also have that label. DD so that they can speak up for themselves and others. Remember, "nothing about us without us", because together we can make a difference!

This is the logo for the 2016 Self-Advocacy Conference, "Nothing About Us Without Us". It is a hand-drawn logo. The words are drawn on top. Below the words, there are drawings of people in various shapes and sizes. The people have their arms extended to each other to hold hands. Some of the people use wheelchairs, a cane or crutches.

Nothing About Us Without Us, Rhode Island's 21st Annual Statewide Self-Advocacy Conference, took place on Thursday, October 27th at the Crown Plaza in Warwick, RI. Click here to view the full conference program.

We may be biased, but this year's conference was AWESOME! Advocates in Action was the host for RI's 21st annual statewide Self-Advocacy Conference, but as in previous years, this was an true collaboration and team effort. We are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day a success!

Nothing About Us Without Us was made possible with support from the RI Department of BHDDH, the generosity of this year’s sponsors, our hard-working planning committee, board members and volunteers, the incredible presenters who shared 18 informative and empowering workshop sessions, and this year’s super-talented keynote singers, whose Music with a Message helped capture and convey themes such as Inclusion and Equality in a way that simple words could never do.

We also want to thank the 350 plus individuals who took the time out of their busy schedule to spend their day and/or evening with us. Your presence helped make RI’s 21st statewide Self-Advocacy conference a success!

To everyone who was a part of Nothing About Us Without Us, we would like to say a great big THANK YOU!! Together, we can make a difference!

Check back soon to see photos from the day and more!

PCP: Volume 1, short for "People Coloring Pictures", is an adult coloring book that includes artwork and ideas from members of the Advocates in Action RI Leadership Series. Class members drew these pictures as we discussed topics such as Self-Advocacy, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Informed Decisions and Choice, “Home Sweet Home”, Real Jobs and Community Integration. These topics, and others, are all part of something called Person Centered Planning.

We created this book as a fun way and comfortable way to have conversations about Person Centered Plannning and other important issues. We hope you enjoy it!

Advocates in Action is in the process of creating additional materials about Person Centered Planning, including "PCP: Volume 2"! We will also be offering various opportunities to learn more about Person Centered Planning and related topics in the months to come.
